What if technology is the change agent to make humanity more human? If the pinnacle of performance in so many jobs is machine-like optimization, I say fashion the machines to do the mechanistic. Let the inhumane do the inhuman jobs of packaging widgets, pulling orders, entering data, crunching numbers and reviewing legal documents. Does anyone like doing that crap anyway?
Wouldn’t it be ironic if AI brought us back our humanity, back to the land, to grow our own food, raise well-trained dogs (mine are always so naughty), make art, create, ponder, build things with our hands and break bread together again? Prediction: the rise of the robot will raise up the artisan.
While the bots are roboting we will make music because that’s what musicians do, and as we do humans will gather because that’s the human thing to do. Custom commercial entertainment, recorded music and recorded story will be commoditized. Live performance, live magic, live art will be prized – authentic humanity will command a premium. The world of work will revolve around the truly creative, the unpredictable and visionary. Also in high demand will be those who catalyze connection with others and those who help others connect kinesthetically with the physical world.
It is a little scary, it’s coming quickly and it will be revolutionary. Ironically, the artificial intelligence revolution could represent our best shot at regaining our humanity.
